LDSFC members fishing aboard ‘Strongbow’ from Poole on a recreational trip arrange by the club, here is how they got on……….

Given the extremely large tides predicted, Dick opted to start the day on a deep water mark near to the shingles, allowing the anglers to fish relatively light. This produced bites from the off from dogfish and pout, however, it was Chris Ellis who boated the first good fish of the day with a lovely cod of 10lb 1oz which gave him a good workout on light gear. Coincidently, whilst playing the cod to the net, Pete Drodge also hooked into a very large fish which refused to be brought up and eventually spat the hook- a real shame. Shortly afterwards it was Arran Harmer’s time to shine by boating a fine bass weighing 9lb 6oz which gave a very good account of itself and made the long trip East very worthwhile.

As the northerly wind picked up, a move was made to Christchurch ledge where birds were seen working the water. Members wasted no time in fishing a variety of lures and feathers and before long an array of species were soon coming aboard including a handful of bass, stunning ballan wrasse to 1lb 14oz, pollock to 3lb, garfish and mackerel.

A final move was made yet closer to shore to try for plaice and squid as the day drew to a close near to Boscombe pier, and despite several plump plaice being caught, the squid remained elusive even after dark.

Overall a great day was had by all with a wide variety of species seen throughout the day.
