The 2017 Cod Masters didn’t exactly go according to plan when anglers failed to catch a cod. The 8 anglers that had entered the £1000 first prize comp fished aboard ‘White Maiden,’ with the cod being thin on the ground so far this year it was down to skipper Les to chose between the solent or south of the needles. Les chose the latter anchoring roughly a mile outside.

As there were only 8 of us we all agreed to start fishing an hour earlier to make the most of the day, lines down at 9am.

Fish were caught on the first drop, whiting and dogfish. Just over an hour in the comp Chris Hunt hooked into a larger fish that turned out to be a cracking pollock of 14lb.

Not long after I pulled up another whiting, this one was a little bigger at 4lb, I did think it was a small cod as it was coming up through the water.

There were plenty of dogfish, whiting along with a few strap congers throughout the day.

So the £1000 prize was not won so we have rolled it over to next years competition…….
